Community Partnerships Introduction

Our community partnerships remain very important to us.   The local community, organisations and charitable trusts support the school in so many ways.   They do this through volunteering, donations, grants and gifts.   This enables the school to provide additional resources and educational experiences. Thank you for supporting our school.

Stonehouse Community Allotments

The Apperley Centre.  Post 16 students have been  involved in work experience partnerships. 

Lets Remember the Charity Golf Day 18th October 2015 which raised  at least £3,500 on the day!

What a fantastic day it was.  A very early start with a free complimentary goody bag per golfer (filled with golf supplies from donations and information about The Shrubberies School).  There were lots of raffle prizes won by guests and heaps of cakes and slices of melon sold.  The Golfers travelled far and wide,  to raise funds for the day (Birmingham, Coventry and Cambridge).  First tee off was at 10.00am all the way through to 2.20pm.  Last arrival back from the course was 5.30pm.  Players enjoyed a chipping and putting competition and prizes went on through the day to 8.00pm.

The feedback was truly amazing and the day enjoyed by all as well as well as creating an awareness of The Shrubberies School.

Lets remember May 2015 :  DHL UK Community Enterprise

We are delighted to have had the support of DHL who committed time and energy working on a voluntary basis here at The Shrubberies School.  The volunteers came and worked incredibly hard.   As a result, our outdoor classroom and early years playground house was renovated.   This resulted in much improved learning environments for our children.   They included groups of children to work alongside them.  This gave some of our senior students valuable work experience.   

We are also extremely grateful to DHL staff who attended our May Fayre in the past.   They provided an ice-cream stall, organising the donation of the ice-creams from Unilever and manning the stall.  This raised a magnificent sum of £152.15.   This is £100 more than we have ever raised selling ice-creams before! 

Very many thanks to the DHL Team: Lucy McCrave, Gary Woods, Chris Bourne, Steve Harley, Paul Godwin Andy Knight and Martin Walsh.   We look forward to working with you again in the future. 

Veolia Environment : Supporting the local community.

We are grateful to employees of Veolia who have visited our school and spent time with us. They have helped with cleaning tasks, donating plants for our May Fayre and also providing plants for the grounds of our school.    We were very grateful to receive an iPad, kindly donated by a member of the Veolia staff.  Our grateful thanks to everyone for their continued support.

HSBC Staff

For many years now, the staff at HSBC have supported the school by helping out with raffles at Christmas, at The May Fayre and other community events.  They match fund our PTA fundraising events where possible.   This much valued support has helped boost our fundraising considerably.   We remain very grateful for their continued support.

Stonehouse Community Partnership

The Shrubberies School is involved in local community partnerships in our town of Stonehouse.  In 2014 the school was supported and took part in community arts festival which we are sure will provide many opportunities for involvement in various artistic enterprises.  

Shopping in the local community

Pupils visit the community often, and develop their independent living skills by visiting the local town shops.

Work experience in the local community

Our pupils engage in local work experience: The local Co-op, Riverside Café in Ebley Wharf and charity shop have all been involved in helping our young people enhance their working skills.

Gifts and donations from the community

We are very fortunate to have the support and friendship of local businesses, groups and clubs, and they have supported us over many years and continue to do so when they are able.  This support is greatly appreciated, and helps the pupils engage in additional extra curricular activities and increases pupil awareness -  they are part of a great community working together! We enjoy meeting you all at our annual May Fayre which is our biggest annual fund-raising event. Very many thanks to you all. 

Remembering International Partnerships : The Comenius Project Academic Year 2013 / 2014

Comenius News Report

• In March, pupils and staff joined the Comenius partnership group for a visit to two special schools in Belgium. The main focus was cooking together, using recipes from all the partnership countries and producing a banquet for all to enjoy together!  See their report from Belgium below.

  Pupils from all the schools also participated in indoor and outdoor sport s together.

  Everyone enjoyed playing wheelchair basketball!!

  Other activities included a trip to Bruges and Brussels, with guided tours and opportunities to try local treats such as luscious Belgium chocolate and waffles!

• In May, three members of staff travelled to the most southern point of Spain to visit the Spanish partner school. They worked together with staff from all the Comenius group schools on completing the final report and bringing this Comenius partnership to a close.

• During the Comenius Project students and staff alike have enjoyed working together with other European Special Schools, and have made friends all over Europe!

   We hope to maintain these connections and to begin a new partnership in the future, offering students the chance to travel abroad and meet young people like themselves from different countries.

• On June 19^th, seven of The Shrubberies secondary students will attend a Comenius Sharing Day, in Gloucester, where they will participate in making presentations about all the countries that our school has visited, and those other nations that were involved in the project.

• This will be a chance for the students to showcase the aspects of the project that they found interesting and stimulating. On their return they will share their experiences with the rest of the secondary department.

• Throughout the project the students from The Shrubberies School have represented their school exceptionally well! They have supported each other whilst away from home, and shown curtsey and consideration to others. They have been enthusiastic, cheerful and polite, and have made us all very proud!

Remembering Belgium

We hosted  two different Belgian schools, one in the West and one in the North East.  Four students and three members of staff from The Shrubberies spent  a week with students and staff of all our partner schools, in Belgium.  Our theme on this visit was cookery. 

We will all work together to produce a Comenius banquet!!

During the week we  met the pupils and staff of our partner schools .  We will also visit Bruges and Brussels, and see the famous Atonium.

In school we made a model of the Atonium, using nine spheres. Each sphere had been decorated by pupils in a different partner schools.
