Welcome to The Shrubberies School website. The Shrubberies is a maintained special school catering for pupils with severe or profound learning disabilities, aged from 2 to 19. All pupils, apart from those in our Nursery, have a Statement of Special Educational Needs.
If you visit the school you will find busy children, enjoying their learning. In our Early Years Department, children from Nursery, Reception and Key Stage 1 follow a curriculum based on the Early Years Foundation Stage, which is focussed on learning through play. The Primary and Secondary Departments follow the National Curriculum but access it largely through practical activities and with a strong focus on basic skills, such as literacy and numeracy. Many pupils follow individual timetables which meet their specific needs. Some pupils who have completed mainstream Primary education join us at 11 to benefit from the smaller environment and specialist support. At 16, most of our pupils move on to local Colleges, but some move on to our nearby further education provision, The Apperley Centre, where they are joined by students from other local special schools. Here they follow a 3 year programme, aimed at developing skills for adulthood and moving them towards as much independence as possible.
Partnership is a key element of our work here as we strive to provide the best possible education for our children. We value our strong community links, our joint working with other professionals and in particular our partnership with our families.
We hope you enjoy our website and are able to find the information you need. If you have further questions, please contact us.
